What do you look for in a film?

The other day I was shown a trailer to a bike flick which I was told was going to be good. I wasn't that impressed by it as every clip seemed to feature someone getting air and not a lot else. Which got me thinking: Is there a film formula out there to please everyone? Have we just grown tired of the 'action' bike flick?

What do people look for in a vid that makes it good to them?

Would like to know because I wasn't aware of there being such varied opinions out there!

personally i like films that have varietsy and show more about what riding is about rather than just getting big air...like the singletrack sections in The Collective and Roam or much of the action in the Earthed films.

when your watching NWD or something similar it's all about pulling huge trick which although look good isn't what the "average joe" rider is doing....and so ends up being a bit boring in my opinion.

There's no set formula. These days, a film has to be different without going too far off the mark (the opera music in chlorophillia seemed a bit excessive). Collective was the first of it's kind and therefore remains best flick for me. Kranked 6 was again, unique but still a solid bike film so it scored high with me. Then CKD was as the title suggests but had a really loose and 'spirit of biking' feeling to it; another classic.

I liked NWD 7 but it does get boring just seeing flipwhip after flip after tailwhip.

Yeah thought it was funny how in Disorder 6 the I didn't actually spot the 'main trick' until watching it third time. Cam McCaul pulled a flip x-up 1 footer but because of all the backflips before it, it didn't actually notice it.

Some of the shots in Disorder 7 were amazing though, for me it's all about the creativity of a clip. Love cable shots the most though Very Happy

cables are the best shot really...no other way to capture a whole line unless you use a helecopter in an open space, but then the sound is kinda ruined.

there are redeaming features in most films, can't remeber if it's in NWD5 or 6 but the Gacia section in one of those is one of my Favourites next to some other choice sections from CKD and ROAM.

i thionk that CKD got a near perfect mix for me, some simple singletrack (like) sections and then fottage from crankworks for some hardcore trickstyle.

CKD is a strong choice in my collection of best films. Like you say good mix of riding and a great 'chilled' vibe to it - never feels too serious.

Someone recently said to me that CKD wasn't all that great (same person who showed the trailer I mentioned earlier), which kinda confused me. What hadn't they seen in it?

Think it's always good to incorporate alot of scenery (surroundings to a shot) in a seg. The environment is always something I see as important in any flick.

The Collective's films are always good at the sceanary shots. some of my faveourite have to be from the opening segment of ROAM, or the Costa Rica segtment in CKD...now that was a good one, there wasn't a huge ammount of riding, it was more about a bunch of guys/girls hanging out on holiday, exacly what biking is about...not just the riding but the places and the friends....just happens to be a place i wana go too.

Which brings us back to what do you look for in a film; Somthing that portrays mountainbiking in a stylish way.

thats it, and there are times when you want to see just what can be achived on a mountain bike, that is where NWD come in, but the majority of the time it is just wanting to see others riding in a stylish way.

a good film doesn't need to be all riding, personally i'd like to see some that have at least a small section that shows the trail deing built...like a time lapse kinda thing...we want to do that in out video this year but none of your camara's are up to it Sad

my mate luke is in ckd costa rica(feeds the seagull etc....)
Ben03

That's quality!

Saw an article in the new Dirt to do with Costa Rica. Looks amazing. Did your mate let you know he was in it or was that a surprise?

To do with environment setting and stuff, has anyone seen Elementals? Would be interested to see how that's been styled.
jedi

elemental is good but we ride the trails romo does in hsc3!
wade went with luke so i knew ambrose was going to film it
Ben03

Small world eh?

As for types of shot would rate the trusty headcam highly as well. Soo sweet on the shore stuff!

There seems to be a lot more publicity about peru recently. Looks an awesome place. I'm happy with going to the alps for now though...
abruce

Heffers

best month ever!! Cool

i really wana do some of the stuff that we saw out there...there was even talk from one of the guides about this HUGE downhill run...think it ran from the top of a mountain to the bottom of a valley and was like 250K long or something stupid...need to find it, nay, MUST find it Twisted Evil
Ben03

Sounds cool! Really want to visit a country/ area where the natural contours can be shaped into huge hips and stuff. Morocco in Roam looked like my cuppa (was portrayed nicely as a very flowing location in that seg- back to the topic Wink ). 250k descent though.....
adam T

all i look for in a film is to get me in the mood to ride, especially if i'm tired it has to motivate me alot Exclamation Exclamation
JAW
