The things you've been told.

A bit of an unusual thread but want to know whether other people have experienced something similar.

Its kind of boring that in society bikers are the bad people who are told off wherever they ride. I'm getting tired of it. I have recently been told that if you build a jump, someone could fall over it (even if its miles off a footpath), break a leg and sue for £1000's. What?! I see that on similar lines to saying all litter bins should be removed as people could walk up, over it and fall off the opposite side. Similar size and equally dumb.

We are also not allowed to ride on our local commons, but horses can. Why? Because we cause more erosion (?). Apparently we can ride on the road instead. Err no thanks.

I have also been told that building a take-off into a bank of half-dead weeds was destroying a 'beautiful hill'. Whatever floats your boat then. (I can understand this one a tiny bit though).

It seems that everyone in public is prepared to treat us like we are in the way and being a nuisance doing our own thing. Perhaps we better take up hiking instead?

Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem whilest going for a pedal?

Seems like somethings bothering you Ben!  Wink

It seems that as a nation we are being drawn more and more into the American system of gaining a quick buck from law suits (claims direct etc). It too p*sses me off no-end to be told you can't build this here or the council won't support a bike park because of health and safety. I'm of the view that if you big enough and ugly  enough to throw yourself of something then you know exactly what your doing and the repercussions of your actions if it goes wrong.

Unfortunately there are a minority of morons that ruin it for the majority.

You only need to look in the Freeride area at Bedgbury to see numerous fools with no helmets flying around. It only takes a big off, an ambulance and some stitches and the FC have to re-assess the FR area.

Having just completed the 3 Peaks last month, hikers are pretty much viewed as scum around anywhere worth walking anyway.

Table Tennis anyone?

Yep had the icing on the cake recently when being told how many offences you could be done for for building a jump  Evil or Very Mad

That one doesn't work either? Maybe in order to avoid being treated like scum we ought to adjust to a national standard and sit in front of the TV all day.

It seems silly as am sure a sign of 'ride at your own risk' would cover pretty much any angle of attack for a suer?

I remember seeing some magazine or website article that had found that cycle tyres often caused less damage to undergrowth than walkers due the the short amount of time a tyre is putting pressure on a bit of mud...
Don't know how much i believe that but its a nice thought...

People just want 'things' to serve the purpose they see them to be fit for....
e.g. a field is there for looking pretty, a road is there for cars..... any exception to these rules or expression of a landscape in a way other than they deem fit and people get confused which means people get pissed...

I find that with pretty much anything you do in life, someone will take offence and/or try to stop you.  Don't take it too seriously as you know what's reasonable and that's the best thing to stick to.

I usually lead with sarchasim - works a charm.

"Oh sorry, yes I can see that my actions are totally irresponsible and I could easily of hurt someone with my reckless riding, not to mention the damage I'm doing to the ground, which is very irresponsible. Thank you for pointing this out to me, I will do my very best to moderate by behaviour in future and I apologise professulely for any offence I may have caused you - bye" - (moonwalks away with wry grin on face  Wink )

Just remember, they are all special people in there own way and they don't even realise how daft they sound to us. They have their perception of the world and we have ours.
